In the begining……..

Over the past 20 something years I have explored a number of mediums. I use the specific character of the material as a starting point for the body of work.

For example last year we moved into a house built in the 60’s. There were some old rolls of paper from the 60’s and 70’s and I was also able to remove some wallpaper, in tact, from a couple of the rooms and use it for a number of paintings and collages. The material, particularly what has been taken from the walls, has a particular character and is of a period of time that has a profound effect on what I produce.

Using various materials brings with it surprises and forces me to adapt techniques and be flexible, often producing things that are beyond my original idea. This surprise element, much like the effect of a kiln on ceramics and the final image that is revealed when printing, add to the works produced.

A consistent theme of my work has been using steel and wire to draw in space, mainly figurative and of varying scales, from 4meters to table top pieces. Again I prefer to use steel from scrapyards and repurpose it, its all about the character of the materials for me.

I grew up in the UK and have been fortunate to travel and more importantly live in many countries. I have a great love of Asia and the Sub Continent and Europe.

A recent trip to Capraia and Elba.

The ferry crossing to Capraia is usually two and a half hours but due to strong winds and very heavy seas it took a very uncomfortable four plus hours!

i’ve included a couple of quick watercolours that I completed whilst there. one is the view from Bagnaia of the fort that housed Napoleon and Porta Ferraia

Recent trip to Capraia and Elba

Years ago I made some mobiles of toucans and spider monkeys that were very enjoyable to make and captured the essence of the animals whilst being joyous and lighthearted.

In reviewing my photos make the site I found that I had to make a new version.

Recently been using video of dancers for some quick works in ink and charcoal and then making some 3D pieces, lots of fun!
